Piobaireachd Manual
Devised, Arranged, Compiled and Published entirely by
Major Archie Cairns, MMM, CD,
( and first published in 2004 )
This is a Piper’s Aid to reading, understanding and playing Ceol Mor, using many of the original methods of instruction devised by Major Cairns during the 60 years he has studied, played and taught piobaireachd.
He received his tuition from his father, Pipe Major John Knox Cairns, Pipe Major John Wilson and Captain John A. MacLellan, MBE.
This Manual is intended for those who already play the Great Highland Bagpipe, whether they play piobaireachd or not. In addition to 90 Pages of easy-to-follow instructions, there are written examples/excerpts from 19 different tunes. It comes with a CD, on which Major Cairns has recorded 60 Audio Examples of movements, correct/incorrect sounds, exercises, rhythms, etc. , on the Practice Chanter.
As in the "How To" Manual for Light Music, Archie has devised "neumonics" for some of the rhythms and movements found in piobaireachd. Samples of the format and typesetting, plus "neumonics" and how to "Build" some of the movements, can be seen on the 4 Example pages, as follows:
Example #1 - the Dare.
Example #2 - the Vedare.
Example #3 - the Crunluath.
Example #4 - Crunluath Fosgailte.
